Our Story
It started in my great-grandma Otilia’s home when I was 7 years old. The scent of Oaxacan hot chocolate straight from la olla was something I had never smelled. I was young, but I knew that this chocolate was special. This was not just a drink; this was my culture. The older I grew, the more I came to cherish the unique flavors of chocolate made from my great-grandma’s hands with ingredients from the land she loved so greatly. Now, over 20 years later, I find myself living in the same home that my great-grandmother lived in for most of her life. I find inspiration in my drinks and baked goods in the same kitchen she used to cook family meals. This multigenerational kitchen, what our family refers to as La Pieza, has been a source of life and love for generations. Now, we hope to share a little bit of our family life and culture with you…
Just 575 miles away from Oaxaca, Mexico, my grandma Maria finds herself daily in her quaint kitchen in Guatemala. As a Cuban and Guatemalan woman, she uses coffee as a cultural practice. Coffee for my grandma is a sacred practice. It’s a symbol of love, a social experience, and something that is held to a very high regard. After years of living in the rainforests in Guatemala, my grandma decided to plant coffee plants. These plants have not just grown, they have flourished. My grandparents began harvesting this coffee, roasting the beans, and preparing the coffee all with their own hands, all to bring it to their children and grandchildren, including me.
Drinks are more than just drinks for us. It’s culture, family, and love. When I began following a vegan lifestyle, I realized that traditional food practices do not often align with dietary restrictions. The deep cultural practice of showing love through food, however, is strong and determined. With the help of my family, I have learned how to create these traditional recipes for everyone to enjoy and share with their own family.
We hope to introduce you to our deeply cherished culture and the beauty it provides to the world. We work hard to showcase glimpses of our Oaxacan chocolate, our homegrown coffee, and our classic, allergen friendly baked goods.
